In his younger years Ruben was a well-known Catlett musician who played accordian at weekly barn or house dances that were popular for many years. People took turns having them at their homes or barns on Saturday nights.
Having had the Spanish Flu in the great epidemic of 1918-19, Ruben Heflin's ears were injured or damaged, and as he grew older, he grew more deaf. He never lost his hearing entirely, but he had very poor hearing by old age. He once said that the doctor came to their house and "poured something into my ears" to help with the ear infection he had with the flu.
He and Evalena had four children: James Wm (Bill); Charles Elwood (Bud - deceased); Eugene Carroll (Gene); and Marylin Faith Heflin Rumph (Faith).
