Alta Merle Parks Smiley, 100, of Waterman, passed away Friday, January 30, at Columbia Doctors Hospital in Sarasota, FL. Alta was born May 26, 18997 in Leland, IL, to Arthur and Ella Bend Parks.
After graduating from Sandwich High school and attending Northern Illinois State Teachers College she taught in rural schools in Shabbona and Malta. She was united in marriage to George Henderson Smiley December 31, 1919.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George; her sons, Delbert and George; a brother, Shelby Parks and a sister, Ada Christian.
Alta was fond of flower gardening and enjoyed playing the piano. She devoted her life to her children, encouraging them to seek higher education. Until just shortly before her death, she was blessed with remarkable health and was physically strong and independent. She enjoyed sharing her 100th birthday open house with family and friends last June.
A memorial service of music to celebrate her life will be held at the Waterman Presbyterian Church, where she was a member.
