Bernard C. "Bernie" Bockes, 86, formerly of 2459 Central Ave., Dubuque, currently of Iowa City, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at ManorCare Health Services, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Family memorial services will be held at a later date. Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Oct. 16, 1925, in Dubuque, son of John and Ethel (Grimesey) Bockes. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School.

Bernie served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, flying missions in Europe. He lived in California and Boston for many years returning to Dubuque in 1981.

He was an author and poet and had several published pieces. One of Bernie's works "Sixteen Poems in Verse and Wood" is housed at the Smithsonian Museum and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

In 2005, Bernie moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa. He was 80 years old when he enrolled at the university, fulfilling a lifelong dream to attend college.

Surviving are his sister, Patricia Koenig, of St. Donatus, Iowa; 11 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers Jack, Walter, Bill, Larry and Dan; his sister, Becky Jones; brothers-in-law, Chuck Jones and Glenn Koenig; and his nephew, Bill Koenig.
