Larry Joseph Bockes, 85, of Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Ill., formerly of 2459 Central Ave., Dubuque, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Big Meadows Nursing Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 22, at St. Raphael's Cathedral. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.

He was born on Feb. 19, 1924, in Dubuque, son of John P. and Ethel M. (Grimesey) Bockes. Larry was born and raised in Dubuque. He attended St. Columbkille's School.

Larry served in the Army during World War II in the Philippines with General Douglas MacArthur. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and a Good Conduct Ribbon.

Larry was employed in construction with Conlon Construction Co. and with Goerdt Construction.

Larry enjoyed hunting and fishing and was interested in conservation issues. He was an outgoing and loving brother, uncle and friend who will be remembered for his love of Irish music. Larry also was an avid Cubs fan and Tiger Woods was his golf hero.

Surviving are a sister, Patricia L. Koenig, of St. Donatus, Iowa; a brother, Bernard C. "Bernie" Bockes, of Iowa City; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Delpha J. "Becky" Jones; four brothers, John W., Walter K., William E. and Daniel P. Bockes; two brothers-in-law, Glenn Koenig and Chuck Jones; and a nephew, William "Bill" Koenig.
