Mary Elizabeth Cutbirth was born April 14, 1856 to David D. and Jane Minerva (Reed) Cutbirth. Her great, great grandfather was Benjamin 'Big Ben' Cutbirth who was a close friend and a fellow long hunter with Daniel Boone. Just before the Civil War broke out her father David D. Cutbirth moved the family from Texas County, Missouri to Hunt County Texas, where he enlisted in the military July 18, 1862. He died due to injuries on August 31, 1863 leaving a widow and five young children. Mary's mother Jane Minerva married c. 1865 to William Ferdinand Etier. On August 11, 1870 Mary married her stepbrother William Henry Harrison Etier in Hunt County, Texas. They were married 40 years, until Will's death in 1910, and had thirteen children together.
