Obituary
Peter Hesser

SUDDEN DEATH
Peter Hesser Found Dead in his Yard---The Inquest and Other Facts. Foster, April 3 -- Peter Hesser, an old resident of Drury township, was found dead in his feed lot on Tuesday. He was out to vote in the morning feeling as well as usual, and he ate his dinner and went out to do some chores. In about fifteen minutes his wife found him dead. John E Wray held an inquest, and the verdict was that he died of heart disease. The deceased was 80 years, 2 months and 23 days old. He was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, and was married to Miss Minerva Rouch of Wyndotte county, Ohio, who lived but a few months. His second marriage was to Miss Mary Ann Horn [sic - Hahn] of the same county. In 1834 he moved to Muscatine county, Iowa, then a territory, and laid a claim to quarter section of land, in what is now known as Sweetland township. He ran the ferry known as the Ball of Wyoming ferry to the Illinois City landing. His wife died leaving him with three children. In 1837 [sic - 1839], at Wyoming Hill, Muscatine Co., he married Miss Hannah Hannan. In 1840 he sold his farm and moved to Lynn [sic - Linn] Co., Ia, but he only lived there a short time when he moved back to Ohio. Being dissatisfied there he soon returned to Rock Island Co., where he resided up to this time. He was the father of thirteen children. He leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his loss. He was a member of the Baptist church and respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place today at one o'clock P.M.

Peter Hesser's Obituary from the Muscatine Iowa Paper on April 4, 1890 states:

"Sudden Death: Last evening we briefly mentioned the death of Peter Hesser, in Mercer county. He resided in Drury township, Rock Island county. He was found dead in his bed last Tuesday. He had been out during the day to vote and was feeling as well as usual. He ate his dinner, went out to do some chores, and in about 15 minutes his wife found him dead as above stated. Justice Wray held an inquest and the verdict was that he came to his death by heart disease. He was 80 years, 2 months, and 23 days old; was born in Jefferson county, Ohio and was married to Minerva Rouch of Wyandotte county, who lived but a few months. (Note: He has a son Herman Roush/Rouch Hesser who was born about 1830. He lost an arm during the Civil War and moved to California. I believe he is the child of Peter and Minerva.)

His second marriage was to Miss Mary Ann Horn, of the same county. In 1834 he moved to Muscatine county, Iowa. (then a territory) and entered a claim of a quarter section of land in Sweetland township. He ran the ferry known at the "Ball or Wyoming Ferry" to the Illinois City landing.

In 1837 his wife died, leaving him with three small children at Wyoming Hill. A year or more later he married Miss Hannah Hannan, and in 1840 sold his farm and moved to Linn county, Iowa, where lived but a short time, became dissatisfied and returned to Ohio. He did not feel contented there and moved back into Rock Island county where he lived up to the time of his death.

He was the father of many children, nine of whom with his wife mourn his death. He was member of the Baptist church, and was respected by all who knew him.

The funeral took place at one o'clock yesterday.--Daily Times, Davenport, IA

Per Neal Hesser, Peter does not have a son named Isaac. As such, he was removed from the above list. Neal has supplied that while Isaac is listed in an 1850 census, in Peter's household, this is actually his youngest brother (his great grandfather). He came to live with Peter after his own father died, and mother remarried.
