Valentine Ham Meriwether was the eighth child and second son of Dr. Francis Meriwether (1737–1803) and Martha Jameson (1744–1818). Born in Virginia, the family moved to the Broad River area of Georgia along with other Meriwethers, Gilmers, Bradleys, etc. He married Barbara Minor Cosby in 1802 in Lexington, Georgia. She was the daughter of Charles Cosby and Elizabeth Sydnor. Val and Barbara lived in Oglethorpe County, Georgie, where their ten children were born: Charles Scott, Martha Jimerson, Mary Elizabeth, Rebecca Marks, Francis (1811–1812), Mildred Barnett, Lucy Harvie Cosby, Francis (1816–1853), Sara Ann and Barbara Minor Meriwether. At some point Val moved to Arkansas, where he died in 1858.
