To Mark A Hero's Grave
———
Memory of Thomas Meriwether, A Revolutionary Soldier, To Be Honored

Monticello, Oct. 23 — The marker to the memory of Thomas Meriwether, Revolutionary soldier, which has been placed on his grave in the old Jordan family burying ground, about six miles from Monticello, by Sergeant Jasper chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will be unveiled with appropriate exercises on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 8.

George R. Gilmer, in his "Georgians," gives the following reference to Meriwether:
"He was a militia soldier in the Revolutionary war. When he was old, he loved to tell how he served under the Marquis Lafayette; how that great general and good man selected him from all his army, as its best rifleman, to fire upon Cornwallis' lookout at an important place of observation; and how, after his fire, the soldier disappeared, and then a twinge could be seen in his (Meriwether's) face as if he felt a human being might have died by his hand."

Thomas had his father's aptitude for knowledge, truthfulness, and integrity, and his mother's artless, uneasy disposition. He got so out of humor with the Democratic administration of government, that he found himself on the 4th of July, alone, drinking "the trio, Jefferson, Madison, and the Devil."

THOMAS MERIWETHER (son of Francis Meriwether and his wife Martha Jameson), b. in Va., 1766;d. Jasper County, Ga., 1831. Served as a private under Gen. La Fayette. Received bounty land for his services in Wilkes County, Ga. Married Rebecca Mathews (dau. Gov. George Mathews).

Children:

1. Frank, mar. Miss Butler.
2. George, mar. (1) Miss Jordan; (2) Miss Watkins.
3. Ann, mar. Fleming Jordan of Jasper County, Ga.
4. Mary, mar. Dr. David Reese.
5. David, mar. 4 times.
