Walter was born in Bay City, Michigan, to parents Johann Grobe (John Grove) & second wife, Marie Katt Grobe. He was the eldest of their nine children together. Walter had two older step brothers, Charles and William, by John's first wife, Willamina Malcha. Walter married Lenora Ramey in Moniter Twp., Bay County on June 5th, 1906. Together, they had three children: Elmer 1907, Sylvia 1908, and Ethel 1910.
Elmer died as a child. While his headstone shows his birth/death date as 1907, Elmer is listed as a 3 year old with his two sisters in the 1910 Census. Wife Lenora died young of Asthma in 1920, leaving Walter to raise his remaining two daughters alone. Walter never remarried. He was a coal miner all of his life. His gravestone reads Grove, as he changed the spelling at some point between the death of his wife and his own death.
