The daughter of Ezra Baker "Ed" Calhoun and Mary Margaret "Maggie" Rice, Esther married Cletus W. German on 18 Aug 1925. They were the parents of 3 children.
Cletus was a teacher and principal from 1925 to 1931 at the Kampsville grade school. Beginning in 1932, he founded Hardin General Insurance Agency in Hardin. The name was later changed to Cletus W. German Insurance Agency.
During his early years in the insurance business, Cletus also worked as a crop duster.
Esther took over ownership of the insurance company when Cletus passed away in 1972.
At the time of her death at her home in 1979, Esther was 75 years, 8 months and 20 days old. She was survived by 2 daughters; 1 son; and 7 grandchildren.
Visitation was held on 21 May 1979 at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. The rosary was recited there at 8 p.m. that evening and a Knights of Columbus rosary was recited at 8:30. A funeral Mass was conducted at 11 a.m. the following morning at St. Norbert's Catholic Church in Hardin. She was buried next to her husband, Cletus.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Calhoun Ambulance Fund or the church.
