The son of Frank Joseph German and Jane Agnes "Jennie" McDermott, Cletus married Sarah "Esther" Calhoun on 18 Aug 1925. They were the parents of 3 children.
Cletus was a teacher and principal from 1925 to 1931 at the Kampsville grade school. Beginning in 1932, he founded Hardin General Insurance Agency in Hardin. The name was later changed to Cletus W. German Insurance Agency.
During his early years in the insurance business, Cletus also worked as a crop duster.
He was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus and was president of the Hardin Chamber of Commerce for a time. He was a member of the Calhoun County Fair Association.
Cletus died an hour after suffering a heart attack. At the time of his death at St. Joseph's Hospital, he was 69 years, 1 month and 13 days old.
He was survived by his wife, Esther; 2 daughters; 1 son; 6 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Harold German of Kampsville, Illinois, and Franklin German of Los Angeles, California; and 2 sisters, Opal Reynolds of Los Angeles, and Dorothy Kappes of Princeville, Illinois.
Visitation was held at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin on 11 Jun 1972. A rosary was recited there at 8:30 p.m. that evening. A funeral Mass was conducted at 10 a.m. the following morning at St. Norbert's Catholic Church in Hardin.
Cletus' wife, Esther, passed away in 1979 and was buried next to him.
