Alfred Belfield and Maria Johnson Belfield had a large family. Among other accomplishments, Alfred was prominent in Rush County where he was one of the Probate Judges. He was also Postmaster.

This couple represent the joining of two family migrations. Maria Johnson's family were Inskeeps and Johnsons. The Inskeeps moved from New Jersey, to Virginia, to Ohio and then to Iowa where they were joined by marriage to the Johnson family who also had migrated from Ohio to Iowa. Alfred Belfield and Maria Johnson met and married in Iowa. The couple and children eventually moved to Kansas.

Alfred Belfield's children continued to spread through the West to other parts of the country.

There were some big questions asked by Belfield descendants.

Where did the Belfield 'parents' of Alfred, Henry, Thomas, William and their descendents come from?

Who were the parents of these Belfields?

Who were the 'original' Belfield immigrants?

What are the connections between Alfred Belfield and other Belfields, particularly Belfields and Belfield descendents in Philadelphia, Ohio, Chicago, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Oregon, California, and other states.

The online correspondence between Barbara Daniels (Belfield,Fugit, Stone) and Jean Colson (Belfield, Fish, Ward) shed light on the Alfred Belfield's connection with Thomas Broom Belfield, in Philadelphia, and the Chicago Belfield families of H. H. Belfield, William Thomas Belfield, Thomas Belfield

Barbara kindly shared a letter from her family collection:
The letter was a follows..
"Letter is: Dr. Wm. T. Belfield, 802, 100 State St., Chicago
Feb. 23, 1908.
Mrs. J. B. Bryan, Hutchinson, Kansas
Dear Madam: Your grandfather, Alfred Belfield, was doubtless the younger brother of my father, William B. I remember that as a child I met him in Bentonsport, Ia. Heard afterwards that he had moved west, and have heard of various towns in western states bearing that name, for which I suppose he was responsible. From your present name I infer that you are now devoting your nursing abilities to your husband and children - which is doubtless the best use that could be made of them. With kind regards, Yours sincerely,
W. T. Belfield ****"

1872 is the same year that Alfred Belfield (1822-1886) wife wife Maria Johnson and their 5 sons (William H., Frank W., Charles Milton, Edwin Warton & Oscar Daniel; and 3 daughters Laura Mae, Mare Y & Maria Louise, left Keokuk, IA for Rush County, Kansas. Alfred farmed, was a Judge and postmaster; their home was first sunday school in the area. Alfred was born in Maryland

Syntha [Cynthia, wife of H.H.Belfield, sr, and mother of Alfred and his siblings] and 6 children arriving Port of Baltimore, in 1820. She had children listed with her: A. 7-Female, C. 2-F, H. 5-Male, T 12-M, W. 10-M & a baby. There was a C. age 32-F with them.

Alfred had quite a history - was well known and highly regarded; had been a sailor as a young man and also traveled to the Calif gold fields.

His son Charles M. was my gr-grandfather; his daughter - Blanche Marilla Belfield my grandmother, Blanche Marylla Fugit my mother....

I have done very little research into the Illinois Belfields - but I'm positive there is a definite connection.

Neither do I have the trail of Alfred's from his birth in Maryland to his Bentonsport, Iowa home. His wife, Maria Johnson was born and raised in Highland, Ohio but her parents moved to Iowa and she and Alfred were married in Keokuk, Lee County,IA on Feb 23, 1847.

An 1856 City Directories of Iowa Index listed: H. H. Belfield - DA40; Thos. Belfield, DU78. .."

...I started gathering info in 1963 when Grandma gave me the family photographs and I began writing things down. Her eldest sister was Laura Anna Belfield-Stone, mother of Milburn Stone who played Doc on the tv show Gunsmoke. The Belfield name is being carried on through Alfred's son Oscar Daniel Belfield's gr.gr-grandsons.....

But - let me know what you think.

Later, J. Colson discovered by reading H. H. Belfield (Chicago)'s account of the Belfield family that Cynthia Wharton and Henry Holmes Belfield and 6 childen came from Nottingham, England in the 1820s where they had been involved in the Nottingham Lace hosiery trade. (stockings and socks). They were engineers and inventors of machinery used in the manufacture of knitting machines. This account is part of the Belfield family papers held in the archives of University of Chicago. This is the institution where both H. H. Belfield and William Thomas Belfield had been well-known professors. The account by the younger Henry Holmes Belfield recounts the family's movement westward to Iowa and Kansas of most of the of Henry and Synthia's children. Thomas Broom Belfield and his family remained in Philadelphia where he continued to run the brass foundry, family engineering business, H.H.Belfield & Sons, originally established by Henry, Sr., who was joined his sons, Henry, William, and Thomas.

Henry, jr. describes the travels and settlements made by some of his brothers and sister as they moved to Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri and eventually to Chicago.
