"Franklin Co, VA Marriage Bonds 1786-1858" by Marshall Wingfield: Edward Stephens/Stevens to Mary Knowles, Apr. 2, 1804, surety John Knowles, minister #122 (Benjamin Sweeny). Note: Minister #122, Benjamin Sweeny, was also the minister who married John Derben Stephen & Polly Bates in Franklin Co, VA in December, 1804. Edward Stephens was living in Franklin Co, VA at the same time as John Derben Stephens, and also was living in Garrard Co, KY at the same time as John Derben Stephens in the early 1800's. I haven't been able to track Edward Stephens after 1819. He could be a brother or cousin of John D. Stephens. The only time Edward Stephens was on the Franklin Co, VA tax list was 1804, the year of his marriage. John Derben Stephens was never on the Franklin Co, VA tax list.

John D. Stephens, farmer in Garrard County, KY, and Monroe County, MO. The family probably moved from VA to KY in the early 1800's. The Garrard County, KY tax records first show John Stephens owning 72 acres of land on Paint Lick Creek in 1812. A warranty deed showed that John Stephens purchased the 72 acres of land in 1815. John D. Stephens purchased 352 acres of land on Paint Lick Creek, Garrard County, KY from Jesse Menix (Mullenix) in 1830. The family moved to MO about 1837. John then lived in Marion Township, Monroe County, MO on 440 acres of land until his death. John did not leave a will, but his estate was probated in 1845. The probate records mention his wife Mary, his sons Thomas, Isaac, Robert and John D., and his daughter Nancy, all living in Monroe County, and his daughters Jane Alexander, Margaret Alexander and Elizabeth Pagett, all living in Randolph County.

November, 1820 probate file of John Randall in Garrard Co, KY: buyers at the estate sale include Jn D Stephens who bought a kettle for 2.90 & also listed as Jno Stephens he bought a cupboard for 15.62. Other buyers include Coleman Haley, John L[eachman] Stephens, John Clark, and a John Pagget.

John D. Stephens, Robert Brock & Edward King were witnesses to the will of Moses Renfro in Garrard Co, KY in 1821. Moses Renfro was the grandfather of Martha Patsy Haley who married Richard Stephens in Monroe Co, MO in 1840. Richard was a possible son of John D. Stephens.

Monroe Co, MO Wills & Adminstrations Book A 1832-1850 - John D. Stephens, decd, Jas. Porter prin., Adin Atterbery & Thomas Crutcher sec., p. 325, 1845.

The gravestone lists John's birth year as 1786, but I think he was probably born closer to 1780 since he was married in 1804. It was not common for men to marry at age 18, nor to marry a woman who was 5 years older.
