SERVICES HELD FOR MRS. EMMA STRAIGHT
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church in Mount Ayr Feb. 16, at 2:30 p.m. for Mrs. Emma Straight of that place. Rev. Thomas Kelley was in charge.
Emma Davis, youngest daughter of J. R. and Hannah McCullough Davis, was born in Henderson County, Ill. Feb. 25, 1861 and passed away at her home in Mount Ayr Feb. 13, 1941.
On Sept. 10, 1879 she was united in marriage to Eli R. Straight, who preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 1931. Nine children were born to this union - Mrs. Mabel Campbell, Mrs. Leota Tompkins, Nola and Roy Straight, all of Mount Ayr; Mrs. Irma Poore of Diagonal, Mrs. Hazel Saltzman of Dike; Clive of Golden, Colo.; and Emory and Emmett of Highmore, S.D. All of the children were able to be present.
After her marriage the family moved to Iowa, settling first in Montgomery county in 1882. In 1904 they moved to Decatur county and three years later to Ringgold county. In 1922, upon retiring from the farm, the residence was established in Mount Ayr.
Besides her children, Mrs. Straight is survived by one sister, Mrs. Elba Swisher, of Elliott, 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
As a girl she professed her faith in Christ and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church. Later she transferred to the Methodist church and at the time of her death was a member of the Fry Chapel Methodist church.
She was a devoted mother, giving herself unstintingly to bettering the welfare of her family, relatives and friends. She was deeply interested in civic affairs and social progress. During the years she had been ailing she was always patient and kind as she sought to bear the affliction which had been laid upon her.
