William Franklin Davis was born in Floyd County near Albany, Indiana. At the age of two years, he came with his parents, James R Davis & Hannah McCullough, to Henderson County, Illinois. He enlisted in Co H 11th Illinois Cavalry in 1861. Re-enlisted in 1864, serving until the close of the war in 1865, when he mustered out of service.

On 23 Oct 1866, he married Elizabeth Short of Biggsville, Illinois. William and Elizabeth had six children; two dying in infancy; Carrie Inez, George R, Mary Ellen, and Herbert.

In 1870 William moved to a farm near Climax in Montgomery County, and later to the town of Emerson in Mills County.

William died at his home in Emerson in 1923 at the age of 84 years.
