Chapin - Rev. John Wingard Wessinger, 91, of Chapin, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at Lexington Medical Center Extended Care. Rev. Wessinger was born in upper Richland County, SC, and was the son of the late James Warren Wessinger and Virginia Adair Taylor. He was a retired Lutheran minister and was a member of St. David Lutheran Church, West Columbia. Rev. Wessinger was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, SC. He was ordained in 1942 and served as pastor of the following congregations: St. Mark's/Corinth, Saluda County, SC; Pine Grove/Epiphany, Calhoun County, SC; St. David/Emmanuel, West Columbia, SC; Christ Lutheran, Columbia, SC; Parr Lutheran, Parr, SC and St. Jacob's Lutheran, Chapin, SC. By the time of his retirement in 1978, Rev. Wessinger served as a Missioner in preaching missions in the Carolinas and Virginia Synods, an officer in several Synodical Conferences, a member of the Synodical Home Mission Board, the Conference director of the Christian Higher Education Appeal, President of the Lutheran Social Ministry Society of the greater Columbia area and President of the Central Conference of the South Carolina Synod, Lutheran Church of America. Rev. Wessinger was a dearly loved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise Taylor Wessinger of Chapin; his son, John Michael Wessinger and daughter-in-law, Faye M. Wessinger, both of Chapin; his grandchildren, Stephanie Lane Wessinger and Martin John Wessinger, both of Chapin; and a sister, Ann Ray of Lexington. He was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 23, 2007, at St. David Lutheran Church, West Columbia, SC, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel.
