85, Moorhead, died Monday, May 26, 2003 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. (Wright, Moorhead)

Roland was born October 14, 1917 in Ulen, MN, to Albert and Inga Asleson. He grew up in Ulen. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ulen. He graduated from Ulen High School in 1936. After graduation he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, MN.

During WWII he served in the 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate), a group of Norwegian - American Ski troopers. They participated in five battle campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge. For their service, the 99th Battalion received two French Citations, one Belgian Citation and one Norwegian Citation. He also received the Bronze Star.

He married Ingeborg A. Raun on May 28, 1948, in Twin Valley, MN. For many years he played baseball, along with his brothers, for the Ulen Arrows. He worked for the Moorhead Postal Service for 25 years retiring in 1977. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was an usher for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, always making things for family and friends, and making a canoe. He caned chairs for many years as a hobby. He loved spending time with family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and was always willing to help others. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather and an unselfish man.

He is survived by his wife, Ingborg, and five daughters, Randi (Stephen) Nunnink, Brainerd, MN; Mary Nelson, Moorhead, MN; Lois (David) Paulson, Moorhead, MN; Ruth Asleson, Tahoe City, CA; and Jane (Keith) Johnson, Moorhead, MN; ten grandchildren, Stephanie (Dusty) Dorn, Erika Nunnink, Erik and Kirsten Paulson, Joshua and Alison Suckow, Alisha and Tanner Nelson, Heidi and Molly Johnson; one brother, Robert Asleson, Rollag; two sisters, Janet Solie, Ulen, MN, and Ruth Maxfield, Minneapolis, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five sisters.

Visitation: Thursday, May 29, 2003, 5 PM to 7 PM in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Funeral: Friday, May 30, 2003, 1 PM Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead.

Interment: Prairie Home Cemetery, Moorhead.
