County commissioner J.P. Holland of McEwen, who was prominent in civic and community affairs in Baker county for several years, died this morning at 5 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Holland Izatt, 1505 Washington avenue, after an illness extending over a period of a year. During his illness Mr. Holland spent many weeks in hospital in Portland and Baker.

John Payton Holland was born in Tennessee June 2, 1862. He was graduated from Kansas State college in 1886 and taught school in the east before moving west to Eugene, Oregon in 1893. Mr. Holland was principal of the high schools in Eugene, Junction city, Springfield and Cottage Grove before locating at Sumpter in 1900. He engaged in the grocery and feed business in Sumpter for eight years and then moved with his family to a farm five miles south of Sumpter, where he lived up to the time of his illness and death. His wife, Mrs. Wilder N, Holland, died in Baker in 1927.

Mr. Holland, who took an active interest in civic and community affairs, was elected as county commission in 1932 and served up to the time of his illness. He was chairman of the Baker county non-high school board and a member of several relief committees as well as a member of the district boundary board. Mr. Holland was master of the McEwen grange for four years and held the position of school clerk at McEwen for many years. He was a member of Baker city lodge No. 25, I.O.O.F. and Rebekah lodge No. 8 of Baker.

Besides his daughter, who is a teacher in the Baker schools, Mr. Holland is survived by three sons, Wellington Holland of New York City, John Holland of Portland and Charles Holland of McEwen; a sister, Mrs. Mettie Gooding, and a brother, Charles Holland, both of Los Angels; and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the West and company parlors. Rev. C.F. Trimble of the Christian church will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.
