Fred Spikes, passed away April 27, 1951. He was born February 16, 1879 in Kaufman County, Texas, on Spikes Prairie. His grandfathers, John Edward Spikes and Dr. Joseph Fox, settled on Spikes Prairie before the Civil War in 1845. With his parents, Captain and Mrs. J. W. Spikes, Fred moved to Crosby County in the summer of 1890. He went to the first school at Emma (Near Ralls) Texas, and later worked on several ranches. John and Lillie had three children: Fredda, Houston, and John Velton. Fred and Lillie had a child named Alma. Fred moved to Lubbock and entered the mercantile business and later the real estate field.
