Sam was the youngest child of Capt. John Wesley and Julia Ann Fox Spikes born in Kaufmann, Texas. He moved with his family first to Estacada (northeast of Lorenzo, Texas) and then to Emma (south of Ralls, Texas). In his early manhood he moved to New Mexico and owned a small herd of cattle. After the deaths of his brothers, John Julian and George Richard, he moved to Los Angeles, California and then to Sargus, Los Angeles, California where he died.
