George "Cal" McKie was the son of Oscar Ellis McKie (1891 Baytown, Texas—1953 Morgan's Point, Texas ) and Louise "Bessie" Hiroms McKie (1894 Texas-1977 Texas). He was the third of six children, grew up in Morgan's Point, and finished 7th grade in La Porte. At age 20, he lived at home and worked on a dredge boat. In 1942, Cal and his brother Roy joined the Navy . Cal served until 1945. He returned to the Texas coast and worked as a shrimper. He married Helen Marie Ortega in 1948, and they had several children. They lived in La Porte and then Anahuac, Chambers County, Texas where Cal died at age 74.
