"Bessie" Hiroms McKie was the daughter of a Polk County carpenter and farmer. Her parents were James W. Hiroms (1851 Texas–1900 Texas) and Sarah Copeland (1853 Mississippi–1904 Texas). She was the fifth of six children and both parents died before she was nine. In 1910 she boarded with the family of Wilson W. Armitage, a widowed English farmer in Polk County. She married Oscar Ellis McKie in 1912 in La Porte, and they lived in Morgan's Point all their married lives. They had six children between 1915 and 1930—Lawrence, Roy, George, Fay, Louise, and Anna. All of Bessie's children finished 7th grade except Lawrence who died at twelve. Her husband Oscar and their sons worked on boats and fished. Oscar died at age 61 of tuberculosis. At the time of death they lived on South Jamison Street, Morgan's Point. Bessie lived 24 years after Oscar died. She moved into La Porte and died at age 82 on February 6, 1977 in hospital in Pasadena.
