Alexander Stephens, a pioneer of Benton, died Tuesday afternoon Jan. 25, 1910. He had been in feeble health for several years and during the past few months he was scarcely able to leave his room.
The deceased was one of the early residents of Benton coming here in 1849. He was born at St. Agnes, England, Jan. 14, 1824. In 1850 he married Ann Williams of St. Agnes, England, at Hazel Green. She died May 24, 1864.
To this union three children were born: Mrs. J. Kittoe, Mrs. B. Blewitt, who have preceded him to the grave and Mrs. George Gray with whom he made his home at the time of his death. He also leaves six grandchildren.
In his early days Mr. Stephens was engaged in farming and mining. He was a strong, sturdy character, honest and straightforward in all his dealings. He was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. and an official member of the ME church.
The funeral took place Thursday afternoon at two o'clock from the ME church, burial being made in the adjoining cemetery.
