James was born to Newton Francis Austin Sr. and Sarah Jane Wilcox. He had eight siblings: Newton Francis Jr., Augustus Edwin, Martha Quina, Theodore Hugh, Leon Bernard, John McAslin, David Dewitt, and Paul Leroy. James married Lena Dorlea Michelsen on December 15, 1903. They had one son, Boyd M. Austin. James was known as the Montana Kid. He helped to get all of the horses for the first Calgary Stampede. James died in Kalispell, Montana and is buried there.
