David was born to Newton Francis Austin and Sarah Jane Wilcox in Indian Creek, Bear Lake, Idaho. He had eight siblings: Newton Francis, Augustus Edwin, Martha Quina, Theodore Hugh, James Boyd, Leon Bernard, John McAslin, and Paul Leroy. David was working on a trail camp in the Peace River area of Alberta and became ill with typhoid fever. His brother, Leon (Lee) found him and they started the journey home to Cardston, Alberta to see their mother. David died on the way in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Lee took his body home to Cardston where he was buried.
