James Allen Miller was the eleventh of twelve known children of Charles B. Miller (1809-1895) and Mary Magdalena Bruner (1809-1877), who married 23 Apr 1831 at Salem, Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina.

James first married to Susan S. Patterson (1853-1881) on 23 May 1871 at Bartholomew County, Indiana. James and Susan were the parents of four known children, namely:

1. Dora C. Miller Whitten (1871-1953)
2. Owen G. Miller (1874-1951)
3. Omer Allen Miller (1877-1963)
4. Alta May Miller McCallie (1880-1944)

After Susan died, James remarried to Laurette Belle (went by Belle) Swarts (1865-1927) on 20 Aug 1884 at Hope, Bartholomew county, Indiana. James and Belle were the parents of four known children, namely:

5. Mamie Miller (1886-1890)
6. James Frank Miller (1886-1965)
7. Vern C. Miller (1888-1959)
8. Harry Kenneth Miller (1891-1974)

After James died, Belle remarried to Martin Lawless on 20 Oct 1910.

James was Hope Town Marshall for a period. He died of typhus (typhoid fever).
