Charles B. Miller was the sixth of nine known children of Hermanus (Harmon) Miller (1777-1823(?)) and Salome (went by Salomey) Schauss (became Shouse) Miller (1780-1866). Hermanus was a constant drunk who did not support his wife or children. Salome divorced him in c1817. It is not known where he is buried.

Charles married Maria Magdalena Brunner (1809-1877) on 23 Apr 1831 at Salem, Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Charles and Maria were the parents of twelve known children, seven boys and five girls, namely:

1. Tempy Maria Miller Clouse (1832-1887)
2. Sarah Katherine Miller Bevel (1833-1914)
3. John Ambrose Miller (1835-1907)
4. Charles Van Miller (1837-1894)
5. Martha Louise Miller Pickett (1839-1905)
6. Margaret Salome Miller Jones (1841-1927)
7. Carlos Webster Miller (1843-1862) (died fighting for Confederacy in Civil War)
8. Emanuel Conrad Miller (1844-1903)
9. Owen Levine Miller (1846-1939)
10. William Simeon Miller (1848-1927)
11. James Allen Miller (1852-1891)
12. Jane Ellen Miller Norman (1852-1938)

Ten of the children (all except Carlos (who died in Civil War) and Margaret) moved to Indiana, and some on to elsewhere.

The widow Salome Schauss Miller moved to Indiana with some of her children. She lived there a relatively short time before dying in 1866. The son Charles B. Miller moved to Indiana in 1866 or 1867.
