WILLIAMSPORT -- Mr. Willard W. "Tuck" Higgins, 93, a resident of Williamsport Nursing Home, Williamsport, Md., and formerly of 14521 Blairs Valley Road, Clear Spring, Md., died Sunday morning, April 26, 2009, at the nursing home. He had been in failing health for the past six months and critically ill for the past three weeks.

Born July 22, 1915, in Polecat Hollow, Md., he was the son of the late Harry and Ollie Mae (Chaney) Higgins. He was a lifelong resident of Blairs Valley.

Mr. Higgins served with the United States Navy during World War II. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga with the 6th Fleet and was injured in a naval battle off the coast of China in 1945.

He and his wife of over 61 years, the late Mary Elizabeth (Dick) Higgins, were married Aug. 25, 1936, in Clear Spring. They moved to their current address on Blairs Valley Road in 1947. Mrs. Higgins died Oct. 29, 1997.

In his early life, Mr. Higgins worked for Funkhouser Logging in Blairs Valley. He later worked for Wilcraft Hosiery, Williamsport, for more than 30 years, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Big T Association.

Mr. Higgins was an avid reader, self-educated and enjoyed being outdoors.

He is survived by two daughters, Cleta V. Cox of Rembert, S.C., and Dona M. Humphries of Charlottesville, Va.; three sons, Willard "Jack" Higgins of Hagerstown, Samuel L. Higgins of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Raymond "Bo" Higgins of Clear Spring; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ollie Loretta Lemaster of Winchester, Va.; one brother, Leister Higgins of Clear Spring; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Ronald E. Higgins; three sisters, Devona Cafaro, Susan Malpass and Julia Belt; and four brothers, Russell Higgins, Frederick Higgins, Harry Higgins and Lewis Higgins.

A public viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington Street, Greencastle.

Services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Williamsport Retirement Home Employee Benefit Fund, 154 N. Artizan St., Williamsport, MD 21795.
