Leister Eldon Higgins, 85, of Hanging Rock Road, Blairs Valley, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at his home following an unexpected illness. During his last days, he was lovingly cared for by his son, daughter and family.

Born October 30, 1931 in Blairs Valley, he was the son of the late Harry and Ollie Mae (Chaney) Higgins.

Leister and his loving wife of 38 years, the late Jane M. (Suffecool) Higgins, who left his side on June 12,1998, were married on June 26, 1959.

He was a retired employee of the Washington County Board of Education (Clear Spring High School) and worked for many years at Pangborn Corporation.

He attended the Locust Level Full Gospel Church and enjoyed visiting and singing at several churches over the years.

After his wife's death, Mr. Higgins found his ministry calling by visiting, singing, playing the harmonica and holding church services for residents in several nursing homes in Hagerstown and surrounding areas. He was a supporter of many missionaries during his lifetime and gave what he could to various ministries. One in particularly, Love A Child, because he loved the children of Haiti.

He loved his family, enjoyed gardening, mushroom hunting and back in the day, hunting.

He is survived by one son and his wife, Craig and Rhonda Higgins of Big Pool, MD; one daughter and her husband, Robin and Michael Straley of Greencastle, PA; four grandchildren, Heather Higgins of Big Pool and Garrett Higgins of Fairfield, OH, Christopher Straley and companion, Erin Palm, of Martinsburg, WV, and Leah Straley of Greencastle, PA; two great-granddaughters, Emma Grace Benner and Jane Rilynn Straley; one sister, Ollie L. Lemaster of Winchester, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Devona Cafaro, Susan Malpass, and Julia Belt and five brothers, Russell Higgins, Frederick Higgins, Harry Higgins, Lewis Higgins, and Williard (Tuck) Higgins.

The family will receive friends at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring on Sunday, August 6, 2017 from 2 to 4 pm.

Services will be held on Monday, August 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. with the Rev. Henry Barthalow officiating. The Rev. Bobby Robinson will preside over the eulogy. Burial will follow in Blairs Valley First Church of God cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Washington County, Inc., 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or to Love A Child, P.O. Box 60063, Fort Myers, FL 33906.

Craig, Robin and family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to family, friends and the countless many who our father touched throughout the years. Your phone calls and prayers were appreciated. A special thank you to the dedicated, caring nurses and staff of Hospice of Washington County, Inc.
