Matt is the son of Henry Caviness and Nancy nee ROBERTS Caviness.

Matthew married Lillian nee DALE, daughter of Samuel Dale, date unknown. To this union was born Arthur W. Caviness on April 20, 1890. The marriage ended in divorce before 1898 in Colorado.

Second, Matt married Louisa Fredericka Brunn, (Americanized name), Lola Brown on Thursday, September 28, 1900 at Durango, La Plata Co., CO. To this union were born these known children: a son 1901 and Henry Matthew Caviness born January 20, 1902 in Colorado and died April 9, 1943 in Los Angeles Co., CA.

Matt was a prospector and raced quality horses. He spent most of his life in Colorado. Matt was the caretaker at the cemetery in Farmington according to the 1930 census. A marker could not be located.
