Aslaug Signe Kvam was born in Alesund, Norway to Sigvarda Kvam Qualm and Otto Larsen. She was an illegitamate child. Her parents never married. Aslaug and her newborn brother Henning G. Kvam (b.Apr 18, 1910) were left in Norway to live with their grandparents Anna Kvam (wife of Nikolai Kvam).
Aslaug migrated to America in 1925 her name was changed to Ethel Qualm. She attended Platte High School and graduated in 1930 at the age of 22. She had already completed high school in Norway, but had to do it again. She went to nursing school and worked at the Johns Hopkins Hosptial. She was an RN.
She married Dr. Donald Cook. They had 2 children: Marian Cook and Donald Cook.
Ethel married a Max Cappers who was a CPA for Sears Roebuck.
