Lawrence Steven Qualm (born Laurat Nikolai Olaf KVAM) was born in Alesund, Norway to Sigvarda Kvam (unmarried) and Nils Lauritz Bernard Lausund (B. 1883 D. 1944) on April 9, 1904.

There was a devistating fire in Alesund that destroyed everything (except one building). Sigvarda, mother to Lawrence kept who Lawrence's father was or he chose not to share who he was (depending on his involvement, which might be zero). His Mother told him that he died in an explosion in Norway and his name might have been William Kvam. Maybe Lawrence knew who he was, but had no relationship with him.

Laurat came to America with his grandfather, Nikolai Kvam, Uncles; Henrik and Johan on May 18, 1910 aboard the S.S. Hellig Olav. They stayed with relatives in Platte, South Dakota; John Qualm.

Lawrence had a half sister Aslaug Signe "Ethel" Kvam Qualm Cook Cappers (Her Dad was Otto Larsen) and a half brother Henning Kvam (His Dad Hans Hoel). The siblings didn't know their fathers either. These two siblings had been left behind in Norway to be raised by Anna Kvam. When Aslaug was just two years old and Henning just about two months old their mother Sigvarda came to America in June of 1910.

Once in America they went from Ellis Island to Platte, South Dakota. In June of 1910 while swimming in the Missouri River Lawrence along with cousins and family were having a picnic at the Snake River rec area of the Misouri River. The family experienced one horrible loss. Lawrence's Uncle Johan lost his way and unfortunately drowned in the river. His body was never found. He was just shy of his 16th Birthday. Johan was like a brother to Lawrence and he often referred to loosing his brother in the river. It wasn't until many years later that an obituary was found proving the tragic loss.

Lawrence was a truck driver in Platte, South Dakota and took on many various jobs to earn a living for him and his mother Sigvarda. Until he met his love Dorothy Haugan. Their first and only son was Keith Eugene Qualm born on Oct 27, 1935. They did not marry until March 2, 1940.

Lawrence served in President Franklin Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps. He lived at the Camp Este F-3. They built campgrounds, roads and Forest Service houses, and improved thousands of acres of timber in the Nemo area. According to the records from WPA/National Archives Lawrence spent 3-5 years on/off in the C.C.C. or working as a driver.

Larry was missing his right index finger. It was cut off at the knuckle. I believe he cut it while working in the garage on a saw. He would press into my dimple on my shoulder or arm and I would laugh. Larry wore glasses that made him resemble George Burns, the actor.

Larry lost Dorothy to her battle with Cancer. Dorothy died on her brother Maurice " Mush's" birthday, Jan 17, 1977, that is how much she loved him. Larry lost his mother, Sigvarda in July of that same year. Larry had to fly back to Iowa and bury her. He lost his wife, the love of his life and his mother all in the same year. He was a strong man and the greatest, sweetest grandfather.

Larry was the grandfather to 5 kids and the greatgrandfather to two. He loved us kids and it showed.

He celabrated his 80th b-day in the hospital with his son Keith and grandson Keithie. Larry got pnemonia and died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank.

He was my grandfather and always was a lot of fun. He loved playing cards and when I was a kid I once asked him to play strip poker and his reply was are you sure? I said why not, not knowing what it was. He loved Hershey Candy bars and Double Stuff Oreo cookies with Milk. He had a talent for making things.

In 2013 I made a discovery (with help) that Lawrence's father was Nils Lauritz Bernard Lausund and Nils had married and had two daughters (Johanne Olaug born May 13, 1913/Died May 4, 2004 and Gunvor Marie, born Dec 9, 1914/Died Aug 9, 2000). I would bet that my Grandfather never knew his father, nor that he had two half sisters and more family in Alesund.

Grandpa Larry will always be remembered for the sweetness about him, kind hearted, and the love he had for us kids.
