Born c1678 in Westmoreland Co, Virginia some family trees say (some give her birth as early as 1665).
Died at Billingsgate Plantation (later Bladensfield), in Richmond Co, Virginia but on the Westmoreland county line. Various family trees give her death date as 1726 or 1729 (all unsourced), while numerous other family trees on Rootsweb and Ancestry.com say 1753-4.

Martha Garner Jenkins Harness was the daughter of John Garner and Susannah Keene, according to the book "Jenkins of the Northern Neck" (1988) by Amelia Cleland Gilreath, former president of the National Genealogical Society. Several deeds are cited as documentation but appear to be deductions and extrapolations drawn from secondary proof.

National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, Lineage Book 8 (2002), p.29 shows Martha Garner Jenkins, wife of John Jenkins, as daughter of John Garner & Susannah Keene.

Some family genealogists show Martha Garner Jenkins as the same Martha Garner who married Samuel Rust, while others show these as two different women named Martha. No deeds are found to prove that Martha Rust was a Garner, but the extant records seem to prove they could not be the same two women.

Martha Garner married John Jenkins by 29 May 1695 when a land transaction (Westmoreland County Deeds & Wills Book [1690-1699] page 24) states that John Jenkins of Cople Parish West'd Co. planter...(assigned) to John Garner & Vincent Garner for divers good causes and considerations in the law, all interest in 100 acres commonly called Horne Point on Yeocomico River in Cople Parish. Witness Simon Robins, signed John Jenkins. 29 May 1695.
On 29 May 1695 "John Jenkins acknowledged this deed and stated that 'the premises conveyed are the right and inheritance of John Garner and Vincent Garner.'" (The Grandparents, by Amelia Gilreath, p. 257.)

On 14 March 1698: John Jenkins and wife Martha sold 1000 acres to John Dunkun (Duncan). John Garner, Junior acted as witness and Martha Jenkins relinquished dower rights (Westmoreland Co. VA Deeds & Wills Book for 1691-1699).

Martha and John Jenkins were married c1695 and definitely by 1698 (land records cited above). John Jenkins died in 1717. "Martha Jenkins, widow, and Henry Garner went into court to have her appointed John's Executor. Henry Garner acted as her security and witness" (H.A. Garner Genealogy).
"On 26 June 1717 Martha Jenkins testified that her husband John Jenkins had died intestate. The Court gave her letters of administration for her late husband's estate, and George Eskridge was her security. Westmoreland County Order Book 1705-1721, p. 313; Dorman, Westmoreland County, Virginia, Order Book 1705-1721, pt 7, p. 2]" (Swanson Scott, Dept. of Hist., Butler Univ., Indianapolis, 9 Jan 2005).
George Eskridge Sr. (1665-1735) was the legal guardian of Mary Ball, mother of George Washington. (Find A Grave Memorial# 16211162). It bears noting that George Eskridge Jr. married Hannah Rust, daughter of Samuel and Martha Rust. If Samuel Rust and his wife Martha (Garner?) were having children together as late as 1702 when their son Capt. Peter Rust was to have been born, she cannot be the same Martha Jenkins whose husband John Jenkins died in 1717.

WESTMORELAND COUNTY ORDER BOOK, 1716-1718; pg 39
Westmoreland County Court 26th of June 1717
"MARTHA JENKINS, Relict of JOHN JENKINS deced. came into Court and made Oath that JOHN departed this life without makeing any Will soe farr as she knows or believes and on her motion Certificate is granted her for obtaining Letters of Administration on the Decedent's Estate in due form, GEORGE ESKRIDGE assumeing in open Court to be Security for her faithfull administration according to Law; And it is ordered that HENRY GARNER, FRANCIS AWBREY, JAMES COURTNEY and SAMUEL RUST or any three of them being first sworn before one of his Majesties Justices for this County, doe some time before the next Court."

DNA studies so far have proved neither Martha Jenkins nor Martha Rust was Martha Garner, though some descendants of Martha Jenkins and Martha Rust do match each other as well as descendants of Martha Garner's siblings, and match other Keene and Garner descendants. Martha Jenkins and Martha Rust may have been closely related, or their descendants intermarried, as with most of the early families in the Northern Neck of Virginia.

Martha Garner Jenkins, a substantially wealthy widow, married her second husband William Harness 1717-18. He was about 10 years her junior.
In 1709, William Harness was under age 21: Westmoreland Co. VA Court Order Bk. 1705-1721 page 119: "William Harnis, son of Thomas Harness, dec'd petitions Court setting forth his desire to make choice of a guardian...it is ordered that said Wm. Harnis return home to the service of said William Chandler from his infancy he has had this abode and it is further ordered that he live with and service the said Wm. Chandler till he reach the age of twenty-one years, Chandler to teach him to read, write...."

Amelia Gilreath approximates Martha having had her first son Ezekiel Jenkins circa 1699, placing her birth about 1675-1680. Court records show that John Jenkins was not of age in 1677, placing his birth at abt. 1658-1660.

William Harness' will, dated 25 Feb 1734, probated 30 July 1734 (Westmoreland Co. Deeds & Wills Book 8, page 245): Leaves legacy to his wife Martha, her sons John and Thomas Jenkins as well as their son John Harness. John Harness is to remain with his mother Martha until age 21. If Martha should die he wishes her son John Jenkins to take and raise John Harness until he reaches age 21. Names Martha and son John Jenkins as Executors.

27 Sept. 1744 Fairfax County, Virginia Surveys, page 14: By the year 1744 John Harness is listed as a "Chain Carrier for 602 acres survey for the Honorable Wm. Fairfax near Potoman River about 1 1/2 miles above the Great Falls.
"The Grandparents" (Sept. 2000) by Amelia Gilreath states that this land was probably the land that John Jenkins had sold to William Fairfax.

1.Ezekiel JENKINS b: ABT 1699
2.William JENKINS b: ABT 1704
3.James JENKINS b: ABT 1706
4.John JENKINS II b: ABT 1708
