Mary Elizabeth (Hettinger) Tittel was born on Sept 13, 1883 to David and Maria (Bangert) Hettinger, in Saratof, Russia. She came to America in 1906, coming to Russell County. On June 2, 1907, she was united in marriage with Jacob Tittel. To this union was born five children. Three of the children preceded their mother in death and her husband passed away on May 2, 1939. She was baptized on Oct. 16, 1883 and confirmed on June 16, 1899 in the Lutheran faith. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Tittel remained on their farm south of Russell. After having been in ill health for about a year and a half, she entered a hosptial in Hays where she spent the last six weeks of her life. An operation in an attempt to restore her health proved futile. One Dec. 8, 1948, she passed away at the age of 65 years, three months and 25 days. Funeral services were held at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. C. Landdeck, the officiating pastor. Interment in the Milberger Cem.
Her death is mouned by the following: a son, John; one daughter, Olinda; two grandchildren, Donna and Ronald Tittel; three brothers, Henry Hettinger, of Sterling, CO; Jacob Hettinger, of Lyons, CO; Alexander Hettinger, also of Sterling, CO; seven sisters, Mrs. Katherine Hess of Chicago, IL; Mrs. Betty Ring, of Sterling, CO; Mrs. Mollie Bangard, of Russell; Mrs. Sophia Bott, of Hoisington; Mrs. Lydia Lackman of Sheridan, WY; Mrs. Eva Strecker of Bazine; and Mrs. Anna Boutell of Amarillo, TX.
