He came to America arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana aboard the SS Massilia 14 Oct 1903 at the age of 24. He then settled in Champaign, Illinois. James took his family briefly to Chicago before settling permanently in Rockford, Illinois. After coming to America, school teachers mistakely changed the childrens' name to Cassioppi. James [died] one day after complaining at the factory of not feeling well. It was a very hot [day] and he asked for a glass of water and within hours later was dead.

He married Maria Audenzia Ognibene 17 Jan 1903 in Sambuca di Sicilia, Provincia di Agrigento, Sicily, Italy.
