Their eldest child, a son, Major General George Stoneman, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point; distinguished cavalry officer in the Civil War, and afterwards Governor of the State of California. Byron, was their third child and third son. He was a farmer owning about 200 acres of land. He was first married to Martha Ann Hammond in 1854. After her passing he remarried, Mary Jane Markaham in 1859. He educated all of his family, even assisting his brothers. He died on 11 July 1892, in Ashville, Busti, Chautauqua County, New York, in his 64th year. Interment was in the Stoneman family plot, at Bentley Cemetery in Lakewood, Chautauqua County, New York.
