Mary Jane "Jennie" Stoneman -
Daughter of George Stoneman, Sr., and Catherine Rebecca Cheney. Both parents were of English descent. They had eight children who reached adulthood, four sons and four daughters. Their eldest child, a son, Major General George Stoneman, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point; distinguished cavalry officer in the Civil War, and afterwards Governor of the State of California. Mary Jane, called "Jennie," was their sixth child and second daughter. She like her sister, Rebecca Cheney, remained single, devoting herself to the profession of teaching. In 1870 she was living in the family home of her sister, Mrs. Charlotte Williams, where she was employed as their Governess. In later years she joined the Stoneman family in California. She made a home for herself in San Gabriel, Los Angeles county. It was there that she died on 10 July 1908, in her 71st year. Interment was in the Stoneman family plot at Bentley Cemetery in Lakewood, Chautauqua County, New York.
