Hon. John Thompson Stoneman -
Son of George Stoneman, Sr., and Catherine Rebecca Cheney. Both parents were of English descent. They had eight children who reached adulthood, four sons and four daughters. Their eldest child, a son, Major General George Stoneman, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point; distinguished cavalry officer in the Civil War, and afterwards Governor of the State of California. John was their fourth child and youngest son. He was educated at Jamestown New York Academy and later Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, graduating in 1856. He was admitted to the bar at Albany, New York in 1855, a year before his graduation from college. In 1856 he removed to McGregor, Iowa. There he was Recorder of the town, member of the city council, Mayor of the city, member of the School Board, and State Senator, being elected in 1875 and serving two sessions of the General Assembly. He was twice a candidate on the democratic ticket for Representative in Congress. In 1881 he removed to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, continuing the practice of law, and was elected by the voters of that city to judge of the Superior Court, serving two terms. He died at the home of his son-in-law, Asahel Chapin, on 11 October 1905 in McGregor, Clayton county, Iowa. He was predeceased by his wife Caroline M. (Southland) Stoneman, and survived by their daughter, Mrs. J. H. Long, of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Chapin, of this city, an adopted daughter, Miss Kate Stoneman, teaching in the State Normal School at Albany, New York, and Mary J. Stoneman, of Alhambra, California, two sisters, are all who survive of Mr. Stoneman's immediate family. Funeral services were held at the residence of Mr. Chapin, Friday, October 13, 1905, and interment was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, in McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa.
