Joshua Summers, a well-known retired farmer of Myersville and director in the Central Trust Company, that place, died at his home yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, of Bright's disease. He was aged 77 years, 2 months and 1 day.
He was the son of the late George W. and Catherine R (Michael)Summers and was born on the old Summers' homestead in Jackson district, near Harmony, on May 23, 1945. He received his educations in the public schools of Jackson district and remained on the homestead working for his father until his marriage to Mary E. Leatherman, daughter of Elder George and Rebecca (Johnson) Leatherman.
After marriage he assumed the management of the old woolen mill at Bellsville, which belonged to his father, and carried on the work successfully for 10 years. He then managed the Oakland flouring mill for six years. Later he bought the old Kenny place, a farm of 180 acres, located three-quarters of a mile from Harmony, where he remained for 24 years, when he retired from farming and moved to Myersville. He had owned several other farms in Middletown valley from time to time and was known as a progressive farmer.
Mr. Summers was a member of the German Baptist church at Grossnickle and was for eight years superintendent of the Sunday school. In politics he was a life long Democrat, interested in public affairs and a liberal contributor to all benevolent enterprises.
He was one of the incorporators of the Flook, Gaver, Leatherman, Summers and Grossnickle Bank of Myersville, which was later taken over by the Central Trust Company. He was also a stockholder in the Farmers' Exchange, Myersville, and of the Valley Saving Bank of Middletown.
