One of Bedford County's Oldest Citizens Passes Away.
In the person of Joseph F. Beegle death has claimed one of Bedford county's oldest citizens. At a ripe old age he resigned his spirit into the hands of him who gave it. Mr. Beegle was born on September 6, 1811, on the farm in Friend's Cove from which he departed this life July 22, 1900, his age being eighty-eight years, ten months and sixteen days. In 1839 he was joined in marriage to Elizabeth Frantz. Twelve children blessed their union, six of whom are dead. Those living are Frederick F. and Mrs. Frank Brightbill, of Bedford; Mrs. Valentine Reighard, of Pleasant Valley; Mrs. Thomas Smouse, of Cumberland; Mrs. A.B. Biddle, of Koontzville, and Francis, who resides on the home place. He leaves twenty-four living grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One brother and sister survive him--George Beegle, eighty-four years of age, and Mrs. George Bortz, eighty-two. Mr. Beegle's father, Frederick, bought the farm of his father, Charles, who moved on the place about 1738--consequently the home has remained in the direct line of ancestry for at least 162 years. Mr. Beegle was a life-long Democrat and a great admirer of the political life and labor of Jackson. He was a member of the Lutheran church for seventy-one years; uniting with it at the age of eighteen years.
