Her aspirations were a college degree and a career in law, but early marriage and parenthood prevented those dreams. She retired after twenty successful years with the Salt Lake City Police Department. She was an avid reader; possessed a strong work ethic; and loved nature, especially the birds and the mountains.
She will be missed by her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, some of whom stayed with "Aunt Nelda" while away from home attending college in Salt Lake. Nelda is survived by her daughter, Sherry Van Vleet; son, Russell K. Van Vleet (Diane); grandchildren: Stacie (Troy), Christian (Jessica), and Nicole (Charles); great-grandchildren: Ashley, Dylan, and Abigail Van Vleet, Katelyn Nicole and Charles, Jr. Woods. Nelda is also survived by her brother, Dr. Willis Gordon Kearl of Laramie, Wyoming. Nelda was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. Services will be held Saturday, Feb 5, 2005, 1 p.m. at the LDS Ward, Laketown, Utah. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment Laketown Cemetery.
