Betty R. Payne, 62, formerly of Ball Avenue, died Thursday in Ball Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was born in Muncie, attended Garfield Elementary and Wilson Junior High School and graduated from Central High School. She later attended Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University).
Miss Payne was a departmental secretary in the mathematics department at Ball State University, where she worked for more than 29 years.
In May 1983, Miss Payne became the fourth recipient of the Jane Morton Award, presented by Ball State for excellence in staff performance.
At Ball State, she was a member of Staff Council, Campus and Public Affairs councils, Affirmative Action Advisory Council and a member and recruiter for the Cardinal Varsity Club. She was secretary-treasurer of the university's women's bowling league for 17 years and was vice president of the mixed doubles league.
She was a member of Hazelwood Christian Church and Phi Omicron sorority, Gamma Zeta Chapter, of which she was a past president.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Jo Anacker, Muncie; a niece, Betsy Koger (husband: Denny), Muncie; two nephews, Robert C. Anaker (wife: Jodi), Selma, and William E. Anacker (wife: Carrie), Hawaii; a great-niece, and five great-nephews.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Meeks Mortuary, with Dr. David Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery. Calling at the mortuary will be 4 to 8 p.m. today or before services Saturday. Gamma Zeta Sorority will conduct memorial services at 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.
