CHARLES E. DRURY RETIRED POLICE CAPTAIN DIES
A retired captain of the Owensboro Police Department, Charles Ewing Drury, 63, died at 11 a.m. Thursday [January 15, 1970] in Veterans Hospital, Louisville, after a long illness. Capt. Drury was born January 23, 1906 in Daviess County, and had lived in Owensboro most of his life. He became a member of the local police force on June 26, 1944, and prior to that was a member of the Kentucky State Highway Patrol. Prior to becoming a peace officer, Drury was engaged in farming. In 1931 he had the first commercial combine in this area, and the first tractor in the state in 1933. He was connected with the Triple A, which later became the Soil Conservation program, and served as a consultant committeeman until his retirement from active farming. He joined the US Army on December 3, 1942, and was a Military Police in the 99th Infantry Division at Van Dorn, Miss. He received his discharge from the Army on December 14, 1943. Surviving are a son, Charles Patrick Drury of Owensboro; two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Gaw of Detroit, MI; two brothers, Arch Drury of Owensboro, Paul Drury of Stanley; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Monday in St. Stephen's Cathedral, with the Rev. Robert Willett, assistant pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery at Stanley. Friends may call at the Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Saturday, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday
