After the loss of three daughters in infancy and with seven sons ages one and one-half to fifteen, the birth of daughter Florence in 1905 was the finale for Charles and Sophia "Mary" Johanningmeier. Charles immediately nicknamed her "Princess." Born November 1, 1905, Florence was baptized December 4 by Pastor William Paulsen of St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, Clayton County, Iowa.
Like her brother Werner, nineteen months her senior, Florence attended school longer than her eldest brothers whose formal educations ended with the fourth or fifth grades. During this time period she was confirmed at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Monona, Clayton County, Iowa, by Pastor Albert Daugs on April 6, 1919.
After graduating from Monona High School, Florence earned a teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. Returning to northeast Iowa, she taught at three Clayton County schools--Evergreen Grove and Walnut in Monona Township and Giard ("The Drahn School") in Giard Township. Nieces and nephews were among her students. She lived with her elder brother Wesley and his family while teaching at Evergreen Grove 1926/1927 and walked more than a mile to and from the school each week day. While residing with Wesley, she was courted by her future husband, Elmer Scheffert, highly regarded by the Johanningmeier family.
After Florence married Elmer on June 6, 1928 at her parents' Monona home, she moved to Elmer's farm west of Monona. Sixteen months later, "Black Tuesday" ushered in the Great Depression that lasted for half their married life. In 1949, the year of their 21st anniversary, Elmer died suddenly from a heart attack while working on the farm.
While subsequently living with her brother Werner and his family in Cedar Rapids, Florence married Robert Schnepp on October 5, 1961. Just ten years later, she died from cancer at age 51 on December 12, 1961. Last-born of her parents' eight children to reach adulthood, Florence was the first to pass on.
Robert died in 1965.
Florence and Robert are buried in Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa.
A gravemarker for Florence and first husband Elmer is at City Cemetery in Monona, Clayton County, Iowa, but Elmer only is buried there.
