Elma Lela Johnson was born to Samuel William Johnson (1852-1904) and Sarah Rebecca Reynolds Johnson (1857-1918) in Bethel Boz, Ellis County, Texas. She married Alexander L. Pickens on December 12, 1912 in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas. They were married 53 years before his death. They had 2 children, Dr. Alexander L. Pickens, Jr. & Elma Doris Pickens Long. She had 3 grandchildren, Carolyn Schmid (nee Long), Cathy Schauffler (nee Long) and Spencer Long, Jr. By the time of her death, she had 1 great granddaughter, Caroline Rebecca E. Schmid. She had 3 additional great grandchildren that she did not meet, Paul Michael Ward, Sarah Long Randell and Ellen Long Hilkowski. She worked and retired from Titches Goettinger in Dallas as the head millinery buyer. She loved hats and always thought she was not "dressed" unless she was wearing a lovely hat. She was a kind, loving and generous wife, mother, and grandmother.
