Alexander LeGrande Pickens was born to Bowen David Pickens and Caroline Partain Pickens in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas on 30 Aug 1888. He graduated from Trinity University when it was in Waxahachie in 1910. He worked a number of years as a cotton buyer and in the rubber industry. In later life he owned his own plumbing supply business.
He married Elma Lela Johnson in Waxahachie on December 12, 1912. They were married for 53 years before his death. He was the father of Dr. Alexander L. Pickens, Jr. and Elma Doris Pickens Long. He was the most wonderful grandfather to Carolyn Schmid (nee Long), Cathy Schauffler (nee Long) and Spencer Long, Jr. and the kindest and loving of husbands and father to Elma and their children. He knew great stories and yarns. He was left handed, but used both hands to draw and write. Traveling with him was an adventure.
