Filomena was born in Carunchio, Chieti, Abruzzi,and immigrated to Newburgh, NY in 1888 to join her husband Concezio (Thomas) Valentine, who was a grocer and stone mason. When he died in 1919, she joined her children Mamie, Joseph, and Charles, who were already living in San Diego. She too became a grocer on J Street in San Diego, and was known as "Florence".
