Rita Luella (Goodwin) Gillis was born July 15, 1907 in Stone County, Arkansas to James Newton Goodwin and Martha Eudora (Davis) Goodwin. She was the 4th of 6 children. She met Arlus E. Gillis and would later be married May 23, 1923 in Fox, Tennessee. They would make their home in and around Kensett, Arkansas. In the late 1940's, her and husband Arlus moved to Kokomo, Indiana learning that manufacturing jobs were available. Rita enjoyed growing her garden and going fishing. She always looked forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas where all her children and grandchildren would come for a huge dinner in her very small home. She adored all of her grandchildren. Though she became a 'Hoosier," she never forgot about her Arkansas roots.
