The oldest child of Ernest and Leota Hartner's five children, George grew up on several farms in Kansas and Missouri. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1945 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

George enlisted March 4, 1946 at Ft Bliss, El Paso, Texas, as a Private in the Army, during World War II.

During his service with the Army in Germany, he met his future wife at a local restaurant. They corresponded for three years before she was able to join George in the United States. They were soon married on July 27, 1952 in Clinton, Missouri. They had just celebrated 59 years of marriage the month before George passed away.

George had a career working in the trucking business. He worked as a truck driver for Clearfield Cheese, various other trucking firms and retired from Trans Central Trucking.

George and his wife are the parents of five children. He was an active participant as a father in the the lives of his children as they grew to adulthood. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time on Missouri lakes, especially the Lake of the Ozarks and Table Rock Lake, where he enjoyed boating and relaxing with family.
