Ernest is a son of Paul and Pauline Frederike Brodt Hartner, both natives of Germany. His siblings are Charles, born June 21, 1889, Paul, Fred,Herman, Will, Henry, Minnie, Rose and Pauline.

Ernest, 20, is pictured as a senior member of the Business Course of study, along with the quote "Small but mighty (6 ft.3 in.)." He is also a member of the Debate team in The Saint, yearbook for St John's College, Winfield, Kansas, 1924.

Ernest married Leota McMillan December 2, 1926 at Zion Lutheran Parsonage with Rev. Walter Cook presiding, Clay County, Kansas. Their children include three sons and two daughters.

In 1930 Ernest and Leota lived at Exeter, Clay County, KS with their little boys E George, 2, and Elmo, 11 months in April.

In 1940 they are at Cass, Texas County, MO, not far from Leota's brother Earl and wife Pearl south of Cabool, MO. Daughter Kathryn T, 5, has joined the family. George can speak German and English.

The family later moved to Henry County, MO, then to Clinton, MO in 1956.
